Getting Started in Homeschooling

Even before our daughter was born, my husband and I have already decided to homeschool her. We thought it was the best thing we can do for our daughter. We are both teachers and I was a high school principal one time. I myself had experience in teaching elementary, highschool and college. I took curriculum development and educational management courses. And my husband is currently teaching at Tyco and Monty Tech. Yes, we’re both educators and we both want to primarily educate our child to become “whole” — in mind, body, heart, soul and character.

We believe that education is important and studying in a good quality school system isn’t a bad thing. But good schools are expensive and we didn’t want to send our child in a public school. Besides, I personally want to see my daughter learn. I want to be there to witness her first letter recognition and get to see all her triumphs and difficulties of learning.

So, that was our decision. My husband and I both started reading everything about homeschooling. We bumped into different support groups online, e-stores and homeschool blogs. Everything we’ve read seemed very encouraging. But we are also aware that we really need to be prepared before doing anything else.

Seeing that she needs to start preschool by September, I went ahead and planned her curriculum from scratch. My husband was there to double-check what I have done so far. I made sure the curriculum is consistent with what my husband and I have envisioned for our daughter but at the same time accomplishes the State’s as well. It wasn’t very easy, but I enjoyed doing it. I also know that whatever we are planning for our daughter might not perfectly fit her and I definitely wouldn’t want to be a slave of the curriculum I made. I just want to have a framework ready. Afterall, school readiness means a ready child and a ready school.

So, I’m off now… to work, work and get our homeschool ready!
